County launches mental health court.

The Maryland Mental Health Court program began in 2022 and is now available in the County. The program will substitute the traditional court process with a problem-solving approach, focusing on defendants with mental illness.
Mental health courts operate under specific procedures that vary from one jurisdiction to another, as outlined by the Maryland Judiciary. In some courts, such as Baltimore’s, defendants must enter a guilty plea to qualify for participation. This often results in a probationary period contingent upon the defendant completing a mutually agreed-upon mental health treatment plan.
However, the County will not require defendants to plead guilty to participate, and such participation will depend on the prosecutor’s willingness to divert their cases.
